The variety belongs to the early maturity group. The vines are vigorous and require careful management due to their susceptibility to weather conditions and a number of diseases. The leaf is medium-sized, five-lobed, slightly cleft, and has light pubescence on the underside. The flower is hermaphroditic. The bunch is large, conical in shape, and winged.
The grape has high acidity and imparts freshness, a 'crisp' character, and pronounced berry aromatics with notes of strawberry, wild strawberry, and raspberry to the wines. The wines produced from this variety are usually light and easy-drinking, often with moderate alcohol content. In Portugal, the variety is also known by the name Espadeiro.
