The variety is an ancient Central European grape, genetically originating from Gouais Blanc and an unknown ancient Frankish variety. The vines have high vigor, forming large three-lobed leaves. The bunches are medium-sized, of moderate density, with round black-blue berries and a thick skin.

The variety is mid-late ripening, reaching technical maturity at the end of September under warm conditions. It is characterized by high and stable yields. Resistance to fungal diseases is medium to high; however, due to the thick skin, the berries are not very susceptible to Botrytis cinerea.

The variety adapts to various soil types, including calcareous and loess loams. Wines made from Limberger are characterized by aromas of dark berries with spicy and chocolate notes and contain moderate to strong tannins.
