The variety is autochthonous to the Carpathian Basin and is considered a descendant of the Furmint grape. This late-ripening wine grape variety is characterized by vigorous vine growth, elongated loose bunches, and thin-skinned berries, which facilitates the development of noble rot for the production of dessert wines.

The plant is sensitive to severe drought and frost, and is susceptible to powdery mildew and grey mold. Wines made from Lipovina possess high acidity, full body, and a complex aroma containing notes of linden blossom, honey, spices, elderflower, and fruit.
