The variety «Merlan» was obtained as a result of crossing Merlot and Seibel 13666 varieties. It is an interspecific wine grape that is not grown for commercial wine production as a standalone variety.
The primary significance of the variety lies in its use in breeding work under the direction of Professor Vilém Kraus. «Merlan» served as a parent form for the creation of a number of Czech varieties, including Laurot, Cerason, Malverina, Savilon, Vesna and Nativa.
