Variety description

10 August 2026

The Merlot variety is of French origin from the Bordeaux region. Genetically, it is the result of a natural crossing of the Cabernet Franc and Magdeleine noire des Charentes varieties. It is a wine grape variety intended for the production of red wines, used both in varietal wines and in blends.

The plant belongs to the category of grapes with an earlier ripening period compared to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is assumed that the name of the variety comes from the French word "merle" (blackbird), as birds willingly eat its sweet berries, and the color of the latter is close to the plumage of these birds.
