The variety is a wine grape used for the production of a wide range of wines, including dry, sparkling, dessert, and fortified wines. It is an ancient crop which, according to various theories, originates from the regions of the Middle East or the Mediterranean.

The plant belongs to mid-season ripening varieties. It is sensitive to high humidity and susceptible to fungal diseases, which requires special attention when cultivated in conditions with frequent rains.
