The name Moscatel Negro acts as a synonym for Muscat Hamburg, although in the Canary Islands this name may refer to the Listán Prieto variety, which is unrelated to muscats. Muscat Hamburg is a mid-late variety with a growing season of approximately 148 days and vigor that depends on soil richness.
The vines have dense foliage and low frost resistance, withstanding temperatures down to -19°C. The variety is sensitive to fungal diseases and unfavorable spring conditions, which can trigger berry shatter (coulure). Yield is high but unstable.
Clusters are large, loose, and branched. Berries are dark purple or dark blue in color, oval in shape, and covered with a waxy bloom. The flesh is tender, juicy, and has a distinct muscat flavor. The variety is suitable for transport, storage, and use as a table grape or for wine production.
