Variety description

10 August 2026

Moscatellone is not an independent botanical variety, but acts as a synonym for Muscat of Alexandria. The name, which translates as "large Muscat," emphasizes the large size of the berries and clusters characteristic of this variety in the regions of Sicily and Sardinia.

The variety belongs to the mid to late maturity group. Clusters are often winged and pyramidal. Berries are distinguished by juicy, fleshy pulp, thick skin, and intense muscat aroma. Leaves are of medium size and usually have three lobes.

The plant is thermophilic and adapted to arid climates. Traditional agronomy, for example on the island of Pantelleria, involves cultivation in the form of low bushes for protection from wind and moisture accumulation. The produce is valued for its high sugar levels.
