The variety has ancient origins, presumably from Greece, Italy, or the countries of the Middle East, and is the result of folk selection. It is considered the ancestor of many muscat varieties, mutations, and hybrids.

The plant is distinguished by early bud burst and late ripening. The clusters are medium-sized and compact; the berries are small or medium, golden-green in color with thin skin. The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew and grey mold, and prefers warm, sunny slopes.

The grape is versatile: it is used in winemaking for the production of dry, sweet, and sparkling wines, and is also suitable for fresh consumption. The name encompasses hundreds of varieties, the characteristics of which may vary.
