The variety is an intraspecific hybrid of Vitis vinifera L. Its pedigree includes the Barbera, Nebbiolo, and Dolcetto varieties.
The purpose of the variety is winemaking. The use of the grape in production is regulated by Italian legislation, which permits its application for DOP and IGP category wines, as well as sparkling wines.
The berries of the variety have black skin, which is reflected in the designation "N." (Nero/Noir).
