A wine grape variety used mainly in blends with Barbera and Sangiovese varieties. The berries are medium-sized, round, dark blue or black-violet in color with a delicate waxy skin. The clusters are medium-sized, cylindro-conical, compact, and often have branches.
The leaves are medium-large, pentagonal, and five-lobed. The plant possesses good vigor and stable yield, preferring fertile clay soils. The variety is sensitive to frost and Botrytis cinerea infection.
Wines from Negretto are characterized by a rich color ranging from ruby to violet, moderate strength, and soft tannins. The aroma features notes of black cherry, blackberry, violet, tobacco, and spices. The variety is a product of folk selection and originates from the surroundings of Bologna and the hills of Ravenna.
