The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and has a long history of cultivation in Portugal. It is a wine grape variety with hermaphroditic flowers, used for the production of a wide range of wines, including red, rosé, white, and fortified wines.

Small to medium-sized berries have a dark color, although the variety is characterized by genetic variability where white, pink, and black fruits can be present simultaneously in the same bunch. The variety is distinguished by high yield and good resistance to diseases and drought.
