In Spain, the name Negral is most often understood as the Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet) variety, which belongs to wine varieties with pigmented pulp and is used to impart intense color to wine. In some Spanish regions, for example in Madrid, the name Negral is used as a local synonym for the Tempranillo variety.

In France, there is a rare independent variety Négral, which is a natural hybrid of the Fer and Prunelard varieties. It has a medium maturity period, exhibits resistance to downy mildew and gray mold, but is susceptible to powdery mildew. Wines from this variety are characterized by aromas of red fruits and peppery notes.
