Pošip is the result of a natural cross between the Zlatarica Blatska Bijela and Bratkovina Bijela varieties, discovered on the island of Korčula in the mid-19th century. This plant has hermaphroditic flowers and forms loose bunches with juicy, light green, oval berries.

The variety is adapted to the Mediterranean climate and yields consistently. It is sensitive to drought and strong winds, as well as susceptible to downy mildew and powdery mildew. One of its biological features is the ability of some populations to grow on their own roots in sandy soils.

A wine variety intended for the production of high-quality white wines with a golden hue, high acidity, and notes of dried apricot, citrus, and almond. The alcohol level in finished wines is usually 12–14.5%; the variety is also used to produce the dessert wine Prošek.
