The variety is of Hungarian origin and is historically linked to the Tokaj region. Over the course of its existence, the variety has acquired more than 140 synonyms, including Šipon, Moslavac, Mosler, and Pošipon, which are common primarily in the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

Furmint belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and is intended for the production of white wines. The variety is characterized by a high capacity for sugar and acid accumulation, which allows for the creation of both dry wines with citrus and pear aromas, and sweet wines from grapes affected by noble rot.

Morphological traits and agrotechnical indicators depend on the specific clone and growing conditions, as the variety is cultivated in various climatic zones. The variety is sensitive to environmental conditions, which directly affect the quality of the harvest.
