The variety is autochthonous to Northern Dalmatia, Croatia. Genetically, it is the result of a natural cross between the Plavac Mali variety and an unknown parent variety. It belongs to the mid-late maturity group.

The leaf is five-lobed, moderately incised; the flower is hermaphroditic. The cluster is medium, conical in shape, and medium-dense. Berries are medium-sized, oval or round, dark blue in color, with thin skin. Two subtypes are distinguished: Babić veliki and Babić mali.

The variety is demanding regarding growing conditions and develops best on stony, poor soils. It is susceptible to grey mold. The wines are characterized by deep color, balanced tannins, high acidity, and aging potential.
