The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and originates from the Monferrato region. The name of the variety is associated with a Piedmontese word meaning "ash-colored," due to the strong waxy bloom on the berries, and the letter "N" in the official name indicates the black color of the skin.

The plant is characterized by naturally low yield, which caused the variety to be considered almost extinct for a long time. At present, the total area of plantations remains very small, and the variety is used for the production of red wines with aromas of red berries, black currant, and herbs.
