The variety is autochthonous to Portugal and has many synonyms. It is a technical variety used for creating wines of the Vinho Verde region, as well as a coloring component in blends and ports. It is characterized by vigorous vine growth and a very late ripening period.
Morphologically, the variety is distinguished by medium-sized rounded leaves and dense clusters with berries that have thick skin and colored pulp. It possesses resistance to fungal diseases; however, due to the density of the clusters, it requires good aeration, which was historically addressed by cultivation on pergolas and high trellises.
Wines from this variety possess high acidity, pronounced tannins, and an intense color ranging from ruby-purple to almost black. The aromatic profile is dominated by notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, raspberry, and cherry.
