Cicer arietinum L.
A fungal disease of chickpea caused by Ascochyta rabiei, which affects all above-ground plant organs and can lead to total crop loss. It is characterized by the appearance of distinct spots with concentric pycnidia on tissues and brittleness of the affected stems.

The causative agent of the disease, Ascochyta rabiei (teleomorph Didymella rabiei), is a highly specialized pathogen that affects exclusively chickpea. Symptoms appear as circular or ellipsoidal spots with a grayish-brown center and a dark margin on leaves, stems, and pods. A diagnostic sign is the formation of concentrically arranged pycnidia containing spores in the center of the spots.
The pathogen is characterized by high genetic variability, comprising up to 6–7 physiological races and 4 pathotypes that differ in virulence. Chickpea resistance to Ascochyta blight is primarily multigenic. Breeding is based on identifying resistance donors within the world germplasm collection and wild relatives, such as Cicer reticulatum and Cicer echinospermum, using molecular markers for gene pyramiding.
