Grape Powdery Mildew

A fungal disease of grapevines caused by Erysiphe necator. It manifests as a grayish-white coating on all green parts of the plant, causing shoot deformation, leaf necrosis, and berry cracking.

The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Erysiphe necator, which has an ascomycetous stage of development and a conidial stage known as Oidium tuckeri. The pathogen infects leaves, shoots, inflorescences, and berries, forming a characteristic powdery coating composed of mycelium and conidia.

A typical symptom of early infection is the development of 'flag shoots' from infected buds: they exhibit stunted growth, with leaves being deformed, curled, and covered in the coating. Noticeable brown necrotic spots form on the shoots, and affected berries lose the elasticity of their skin, crack, and often expose the seeds.
