The variety is of French origin and was developed in the Burgundy region through centuries of selection. The plant is characterized by early onset of vegetation and crop maturity.

The crop is distinguished by low resistance to fungal diseases, such as downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold, due to the thin skin of the berries. The clusters are small to medium in size and tightly packed. The variety is demanding regarding soil and climate, performing best in regions with a temperate or cool climate on poor soils.

Pinot Noir is a wine grape variety used for the production of red, rosé, and sparkling wines, including Champagne.
