The variety is of Austrian origin, with Gouais Blanc as one of its parents. Depending on the region, it is known by the names Blaufränkisch, Lemberger, Kékfrankos, and Frankovka. The variety possesses good winter hardiness and resistance to diseases.

Bunches are medium-sized, conical in shape, often with wings. Berries are round, medium-sized, dark blue in color, with thick skin and juicy pulp. Wines made from this grape are characterized by deep color, pronounced tannins, noticeable acidity, and notes of red berries, cherry, and spices.
