The variety is considered ancient, having originated from a natural cross between the varieties Gouais blanc and Blaue Zimmettraube. The name Franconia Nera is used primarily in the northern regions of Italy, such as Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino, Veneto, and Lombardy.
The plant belongs to the late-ripening group and is characterized by hardiness to grape diseases, as well as resistance to frost. The variety is exclusively for wine production and is used to create red wines with rich color, good body, and noticeable tannins.
The aromatic profile of the wines includes notes of black cherry, blackberry, black currant, and earthy undertones. Wines from this variety have potential for aging and development in the bottle; they are most often vinified as varietal wines.
