The variety is traditional to the Puglia region in southern Italy and has a genetic profile that matches the Bioka variety found in Montenegro. The B. index in the variety name indicates the white color of the berries, and the flower type is hermaphroditic.

This grape is classified as a wine variety. According to European regulations, its use is permitted in the production of DOP and IGP category wines, as well as in the manufacture of sparkling wines without indication of origin.
