The variety is native to the central and eastern regions of Spain. The vines are vigorous, highly productive, and well-adapted to low-fertility soils and arid conditions. It is characterized by late bud break and a late ripening period.
The bunches are long-conical in shape, often with a characteristic "wing"; the berries are large, round, and dark red or black in color. The variety is genetically independent from the Forcallat blanca variety.
Intended for winemaking, it was previously often used in blends. Wines from this variety are characterized by moderate alcohol levels, low acidity, freshness, medium body, and aromas of wild berries, wildflowers, and herbaceous notes.
