The variety has a genetic origin from a cross between Gouais blanc and Pinot. The leaves are large, rounded, 3- or 5-lobed. The clusters are small, compact, conical in shape, and the berries are small and rounded.
The plant has high vigor and fertility. The ripening period is early, occurring 0–3 days after the Chasselas variety. The variety is susceptible to downy mildew, but shows relative resistance to grey mold.
The variety is exclusively a wine grape and is used for wine production. It has many synonyms, including franc noir de Cendrecourt, plant jacquot, franc noir de Venère, franc noir de Gy, franc noir de Jussey, and gougenot.
