The main difficulty in cultivation lies in overwintering the flower buds that form on the previous year's shoots; their loss prevents the plant from blooming. In regions with cold climates, preference is given to remontant varieties capable of forming inflorescences on current year's shoots.
The plant is demanding regarding light conditions, preferring morning sunlight and protection from direct midday sun, which causes overheating of the root system. Regular watering is essential to maintain turgor, as during drought, the concentration of cell sap rises above 10%, leading to wilting.
The color of the inflorescences directly depends on the soil pH level: with an acidic reaction (5,2–6,2), aluminum becomes available, turning the petals blue, whereas on neutral and slightly alkaline soils, they acquire pink or red shades. Planting requires fertile, moisture-retentive substrates based on peat, coniferous soil, and humus.
