Rootstock — Sour Cherry

Prunus cerasus L.

The rootstock system for sour cherry is based on the use of clonal forms that provide growth vigor control, resistance to coccomycosis and moniliosis, and solve the problem of excessive root suckering.

In the reference 57 varieties crop Sour cherry, where this is mentioned in the description.

Sour cherry is characterized by a transition from seedling to vegetatively propagated clonal rootstocks, which allows for the production of uniform planting material. A key feature is the possibility of planting the sapling deep, up to the graft union, which promotes the development of a vigorous root system and prevents the negative consequences typical of seedling rootstocks.

The most important aspect remains the compatibility between scion and rootstock, as graft union failures often manifest through gummosis or premature breakage. Modern solutions include interspecific hybrids, such as the VSL series, obtained by crossing Prunus fruticosa and Prunus serrulata, which provide dwarfing and adaptation to waterlogged soils, as well as foreign series such as GiSelA.

The choice of rootstock directly affects the onset of fruit bearing, accelerating it to the 2nd–4th year of life. When selecting, priority is given to forms that possess increased resistance to specific fungal diseases and high root winter hardiness; however, genetic compatibility between each variety and a specific rootstock must be verified.
