Festuca arundinacea Schreb.
A fungal disease of tall fescue caused by Rhizoctonia solani, characterized by brown leaf spots and turf dieback. Pathogen development is triggered by high nighttime temperatures and excessive moisture.
In the reference 26 varieties crop Tall fescue, where this is mentioned in the description.
The causal agent of the disease in tall fescue is the fungus Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, also known in its teleomorph stage as Thanatephorus cucumeris. Symptoms begin with the appearance of light brown spots with a dark border, which, under favorable conditions, rapidly expand to form necrotic patches and turf dieback, where mycelium is often visible.
The disease develops most actively when nighttime temperatures exceed 15°C and leaf wetness persists for more than 10 hours. Rhizoctonia blight is a species complex including various anastomosis groups; however, no clear system of pathotypes has been developed for this crop. Resistance in tall fescue is a quantitative trait, which compels breeders to rely on phenotypic selection and agronomists to manage nitrogen fertilization and drainage.
