Self-fertility — Sour Cherry

This trait determines the ability of sour cherry to set fruit through self-pollination, ensuring yield stability under adverse weather conditions. The degree of self-fertility is estimated by the proportion of fruit set from the number of isolated flowers.

To evaluate the degree of self-fertility in sour cherry, a method of isolating flowers using gauze or fabric isolators is used to exclude cross-pollination. The indicator is calculated as the percentage of fruit set from the total number of flowers under the isolator, with studies conducted over at least three years to account for the influence of climatic conditions.

In breeding, a grading system is adopted where varieties with a fruit set of 20–50% or more are considered self-fertile, 5–20% are partially self-fertile, and less than 5% are self-sterile. Self-fertility allows sour cherry to bear fruit in single plantings; however, many varieties significantly increase yield through cross-pollination.
