Specimen planting is a landscaping technique of placing a single plant in an open space to highlight its individual qualities. This method requires special attention to decorative appearance, crown shape, and plant health, as it is visible from all sides.

Specimen planting involves the placement of a standalone tree, shrub, or large herbaceous perennial in an open area. The main purpose of this technique is to accentuate the plant's decorative characteristics, such as an unusual crown shape, rare leaf color, spectacular flowering, or bright fruits.

The choice of a cultivar for such planting depends on its ability to maintain decorative appeal over a long period and its suitability for the plot size.
