Stolbur is a dangerous plant disease caused by phytoplasmas and transmitted by sap-sucking insect vectors. The disease manifests as chlorosis, deformation of flowers and fruits, causing significant yield losses.

Stolbur (phytoplasmosis) is an infectious disease caused by phytoplasmas. Symptoms of the infection include leaf dwarfing, chlorosis, and the development of a purple or pinkish hue. Marked deformation of flowers with greening petals is observed, while fruits become hard, tasteless, and contain lignified vascular tissues.

The development of the disease in open field conditions depends directly on the activity of insect vectors, particularly leafhoppers, and weather conditions: a hot and dry climate promotes their population growth. The infection persists in the rhizomes of perennial weeds, which act as pathogen reservoirs.

The evaluation of cultivar resistance is conducted by creating an artificial infection background followed by an analysis of morphological changes and the general condition of the plants. For accurate diagnosis, laboratory methods and indicator plant tests are used, with determinate varieties often showing lower susceptibility to infection.
