Pear Winter Hardiness

Pyrus communis L.

The ability of a pear tree to withstand adverse winter conditions, assessed by the degree of damage to the bark, wood, and buds. It is a key factor limiting the cultivation range of the crop due to its higher sensitivity to temperature fluctuations compared to apple trees.

In the reference 123 varieties crop European pear, where this is mentioned in the description.

The assessment of winter hardiness is conducted under field conditions in the spring after bud break using a 5-point scale, where 0 points corresponds to the absence of damage and 5 to the complete death of tissues or the tree. Laboratory diagnostics are based on the direct freezing method, which allows for the simulation of critical temperatures and late-winter thaws.

Pear varieties are divided into groups based on the degree of tissue damage: highly winter-hardy varieties have indices in the range of 0.5–1.5 points, whereas varieties with low winter hardiness show damage exceeding 3 points. To improve these indicators in breeding, interspecific hybridization is used, in particular, with the use of Pyrus ussuriensis.

Pear winter hardiness includes four components: resistance to early frosts, the ability to withstand extreme temperatures in mid-winter, maintenance of resistance during thaws, and the ability to recover after them. Temperature fluctuations that damage generative buds represent a critical danger.
