The Groia variety is traditionally grown in the Italian province of Salerno within the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park. It is a local variety adapted to the specific microclimatic conditions of the region, which has a genetic link to the Ogliara variety.

The primary purpose of the variety is olive oil production. Its organoleptic properties include specific aromatic notes of lettuce (lattuga) and mint, and the taste of the oil may have a bitter edge. The variety is characterized by low cold tolerance.
