The Grossal variety is autochthonous to regions of Spain, including Catalonia and Valencia, where it is known under a number of local names. It is genetically related to the Alfafara variety, and in literature, it is mentioned as a synonym for other local varieties. There are various local clones adapted to specific micro-regions.
The fruits of the variety acquire a red color upon reaching full maturity. Harvesting is usually carried out in early January. The variety is productive, however, it is prone to alternate bearing. The oil obtained from it is distinguished by a high concentration of polyphenols, an intense fruity aroma, and a balanced taste.
