The variety is ancient and of Burgundian origin, possessing over a thousand clones. The name refers to the blue color of the berries and late ripening in German climatic conditions. The grape has medium-sized berries and small clusters, which, due to the density of their form, are compared to a pine cone.
The plant is demanding of growing conditions, characterized by moderate resistance to downy mildew and powdery mildew, low resistance to gray mold, and relative winter hardiness. It is used to produce wines with good acidity and moderate tannins, possessing aromas of red berries, spices, and earthy and mushroom notes.
