Variety description

10 August 2026

Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) is a wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera originating from Burgundy, obtained by crossing Schwarzriesling and Traminer. The variety is of medium-late maturity, has compact clusters with small bluish-black berries and thin skin. It requires demanding care, is susceptible to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold, and is used for the production of red and sparkling wines.

Blauburger is a separate wine grape variety bred in Austria by crossing Blauer Portugieser and Blaufränkisch. It is a medium-maturity variety with cylindrical-conical clusters weighing 140–210 g. The berries are medium-sized, blue-black, with thick skin. The variety has medium winter hardiness (down to –23°C), is resistant to powdery mildew and gray mold, but is susceptible to downy mildew. The wines are characterized by a deep dark color.
