The variety is autochthonous to Central Europe; its origin is linked to a natural crossing of the varieties Gouais Blanc and Blaue Zimmettraube. The vines are noted for high vigor and good shoot maturation. Yield is high, averaging 96 c/ha with the potential to reach 153 c/ha.
Leaves are large, predominantly three-lobed. Clusters are medium to large, often branched and moderately loose. Berries are round, dark blue with firm skin. The variety is susceptible to downy mildew and powdery mildew, possesses relative winter hardiness down to –19...–22 °C, but is sensitive to early spring frosts.
The grapes are used exclusively for the production of red wines. The resulting wines are characterized by a deep ruby color, pronounced acidity, moderately high tannins, and aromas of cherry, blackberry, black plum, and spices.
