The variety has vigorous growth and a spreading vine habit. Leaves are medium-sized, predominantly three-lobed, without pubescence on the lower surface. Clusters are medium, cylindrical, and moderately dense. Berries are blue-black, round, medium-sized, with thick skin and bloom. In cultivation, two main varieties are distinguished: the small-berried Freisa Piccola and the large-berried Freisa Grossa.
Ripening period is medium or late. The variety is characterized by high resistance to downy mildew and gray mold, but is susceptible to powdery mildew. It requires long pruning and is prone to flower abortion and millerandage. It prefers clay and marl soils on sunny slopes. Wines from Freisa possess noticeable tannins, high acidity, and aromas of red berries and flowers.
