The Frmentun variety is autochthonous to Croatia and is traditionally grown on the island of Korčula. Genetic studies have confirmed its identity with the Santa Teresa variety cultivated in Apulia. The name of the variety derives from the Latin word "frumentum" due to the external resemblance of the long and dense cluster to a corn cob.

Historically, the variety was used as an auxiliary in the production of white wines, added to primary varieties to enrich the aromatic profile. The variety is included in the national list of recognized grape varieties of Croatia and is of scientific interest for the study of grapevine biodiversity.
