Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is autochthonous to the Aosta Valley region. It is genetically related to the Petit Rouge and Vuillermin varieties. The name likely derives from the Italian word fumo (smoke), which is associated with smoky notes in the wine's aroma or the characteristic ashy bloom on the berries.

The plant has good vigor. The variety is characterized by late bud break, which protects it from spring frosts, and a late ripening period — the harvest is carried out in the second half of October. The clusters are compact, small to medium in size, and pyramidal in shape. The berries are black.

The grape is used in winemaking both for single-varietal wines and in blends to provide structure and color. The finished wines have a ruby-red hue, high acidity, and pronounced tannins. The profile is dominated by notes of forest berries, spices, leather, and licorice.
