The variety was developed through traditional selection in the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions. The vines are characterized by high vigor; vegetation begins early, which creates a risk of damage from spring frosts. The variety has moderate resistance to fungal diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew.
The clusters are medium to large in size, elongated-conical in shape. The berries are medium-sized, rounded, green-yellow in color, with thin skin and juicy pulp. The yield of the variety is high and stable, but it is prone to shedding of ovaries and berries, which requires regulation.
A technical variety used mainly for the production of sparkling wines by the Charmat method. Glera wines possess a fresh fruity-floral aroma with notes of green apple, pear, citrus, and moderate acidity. There are two biotypes: Glera Tonda with round berries and Glera Lunga with elongated ones.
