The RG9 rootstock is part of a series of rootstocks created to study adaptive properties to Mediterranean soil and climatic conditions. During agronomic trials, the genotype demonstrated efficiency in water resource utilization, although some studies recorded differences in the intensity of water transport depending on experimental conditions.

Anatomical studies show that the rootstock possesses wide xylem vessels with a diameter of more than 75 µm, which is considered in the context of susceptibility to wood diseases. The influence of the rootstock on mineral nutrition was also noted: when used, a higher concentration of nitrogen can be recorded in scion tissues compared to a number of commercial rootstocks.
