Schioppettino originates from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and the border areas of Slovenia. The first mentions of the variety date back to 1282. Genetic studies in 2021 showed that the variety is the result of a natural crossing of an unknown variety and the Vulpea variety.
The variety belongs to the medium or late maturity group and is characterized by low yield. The plant is considered finicky, has low resistance to downy mildew, and is prone to flower drop.
The variety has an exclusively technical purpose for the production of red wines in the Colli Orientali del Friuli and Friuli Isonzo DOC zones. The wines are distinguished by good acidity, pronounced tannins, and aromas of violets, forest berries, and black pepper.
