The variety is autochthonous to the Herzegovina region, known since the 14th century, and likely originated from a natural cross of the Alba Imputotato variety. The vine is characterized by good vigor and high drought tolerance, but it is sensitive to spring frosts, downy mildew, and gray mold.

The clusters are medium-sized, weighing 150–200 g, and have a cylindro-conical shape. The berries are small, rounded, yellow-green in color, and acquire a golden or amber hue upon ripening. The flower is hermaphroditic; the variety is self-pollinating and productive.

Wines made from Žilavka have high alcohol content, good natural acidity, and aging potential. The aromatic profile of the drinks often highlights notes of peach, apple, nut, citrus, and wild herbs.
