The variety Žlaet, also known as Žlahtina, has an ancient origin, documented since the 11th century. Its name comes from a Slavic root meaning "noble." Genetically, it is an independent, unique variety that historically formed in the Kvarner Gulf region.

The plant has strong stems and forms long clusters, which allows for the use of trellises and pergolas for cultivation. The berries are medium-sized with thick skin. The variety is versatile: the harvest is used both as table grapes and for winemaking.

Wines from this grape are characterized by a light golden color, light body, fruity aroma, high minerality, and a specific salinity caused by maritime influence. The product is usually intended for consumption at a young age.

The main area of distribution is the island of Krk, as well as the areas of Novi Vinodolski and Selce. The variety requires the specific conditions of the historical region, including a combination of sea breeze and temperature fluctuations, which limits the possibilities for its cultivation elsewhere.
