Apricot Monilinia

Prunus armeniaca L.

A fungal disease of apricot caused by the pathogen Monilinia laxa, occurring in two phases: the spring blossom blight and the summer fruit rot.

In the reference 98 varieties crop Apricot, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agent of the disease in apricot is the ascomycete Monilinia laxa, which infects the plant during the flowering period. The infection enters through the pistils, causing blossom blight, where flowers, leaves, and young shoots suddenly turn brown and wither, resembling thermal burns, as the mycelium obstructs the vascular system of the branches.

During the summer, the pathogen causes fruit rot, manifesting as brown spots that rapidly spread across the fruit surface. Irregularly arranged grayish or cream-colored pustules form on the affected tissues, after which the fruits become mummified and often remain hanging on the tree.

Apricot breeding for resistance to Monilinia is based on the selection of genotypes with relative or complex tolerance. There is no data in scientific literature regarding specific R-genes for resistance; therefore, varietal characteristics are determined by the general degree of susceptibility under field conditions.

General information about the subject — on the page Moniliasis (fruit rot).
