Plum Monilinia Rot

Prunus domestica L.

A fungal disease of the domestic plum caused by Monilinia species, manifesting in two forms: blossom and twig blight, and fruit rot.

In the reference 89 varieties crop European plum, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogens causing the disease in plums are fungi of the genus Monilinia, primarily M. cinerea, M. fructigena, and M. fructicola. The infection occurs in two forms: blossom blight, which affects inflorescences and young shoots, giving them a scorched appearance, and fruit rot, accompanied by the softening of the fruit pulp.

Sporodochia form on infected fruits as grey or yellowish cushions, sometimes arranged in concentric circles. Fruits with an alcoholic taste become mummified and serve as a reservoir for the infection. Specific resistance genes in the domestic plum have not been described, and breeding is based on the evaluation of field resistance of cultivars.

General information about the subject — on the page Moniliasis (fruit rot).
