Apple Frost Resistance
Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.
The genetically determined ability of apple tree tissues and organs to withstand exposure to sub-zero temperatures. It is assessed by the resistance of the cambium, bark, and buds to critical cold thresholds.
In the reference 84 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.
The frost resistance of an apple tree is determined by the plant's ability to undergo timely hardening and maintain tissue viability during extreme temperatures. To determine a cultivar's potential, laboratory freezing of shoots is used, where the degree of tissue damage is assessed on a scale of 0 to 5 points, and the critical temperature causing irreversible damage is also recorded.
Cultivars capable of withstanding temperatures down to -40...-45°C are considered to have high frost resistance. Severe freezing of wood, cambium, and fruit buds leads to a yield reduction of 70–85% or the complete death of the tree. The greatest risk to the crop is posed by temperature fluctuations that trigger a loss of hardiness, as well as adverse growing conditions that prevent normal shoot maturation.
