Grapevine Cold Hardiness

A genetically determined ability of a grapevine to withstand sub-zero temperatures during the dormancy period. It is assessed by the LT50 index, which determines the death of 50% of buds at a specific temperature.

Grapevine cold hardiness is measured by the critical threshold of plant organ survival in degrees Celsius. To determine it, a method of direct freezing of cuttings in climatic chambers is used, with an assessment of the damage degree to the phloem, cambium, and xylem, as well as the calculation of LT50. Cultivars with high cold hardiness (down to -35°C) are predominantly interspecific hybrids involving V. amurensis and V. labrusca, whereas European Vitis vinifera cultivars are often damaged at -15°C...-18°C.

The cold hardiness of individual grapevine bush organs varies: roots are damaged at -5°C...-12°C, while perennial wood is capable of withstanding up to -26°C. The genetic threshold of a cultivar determines the choice of cultivation technology — covering or non-covering. The realization of cold hardiness potential depends on agrotechnical factors: the degree of cane maturation, phosphorus-potassium nutrition, crop load, and the absence of diseases.
